🧠 Essential Reflexes: Sleep, Shaking & Outdoors
A few simple habits are all it takes to drastically cut down everyday risks.
Dad hack
- Stick your local emergency numbers (emergency services, fire department, poison control) somewhere obvious on the fridge, or save them on speed dial on your phone.
The Reflexes
1. SIDS
Always put baby on their back to sleep, alone in a crib with a firm mattress, a well-fitted sleep sack, room temperature around 19 °C (66–68 °F), no pillows or duvets, and a strictly smoke-free home.
2. Shaken baby syndrome
NEVER shake a baby. If the crying is pushing you to your absolute limit, place them safely on their back in their cot and tag out with your partner, or step away for a couple of minutes to breathe.
3. Doors & sharp corners
Fit door pinch guards to save little fingers and corner bumpers on coffee tables.
4. Pets
Never leave a young child alone with a pet, no matter how gentle or familiar they are.
5. Car safety
Use a certified car seat suited to their height and weight, keep them buckled up every single ride, and only ever let them out on the curb side.
