🚗 Installing a Car Seat Correctly
A poorly installed car seat is basically useless in a crash. Keeping your kid rear-facing is 5 times safer for their fragile neck and spine.
Gear you'll need
- 1 safety-approved car seat (i-Size / UN R129 or your local safety standard).
- Isofix / LATCH base or connectors (or seatbelt, depending on the model).
Step-by-step guide
1. Seat direction
Keep them rear-facing for as long as possible (at least until 15 months, ideally up to age 4).
2. Airbag deactivation
If the car seat is installed in the front passenger seat, turning off the front airbag is strictly non-negotiable.
3. Harness height adjustment
The shoulder straps should start at or just below your child's shoulders when rear-facing.
4. Tightening (The Pinch Test)
Snug the harness right up to their body. You shouldn't be able to pinch any webbing between your fingers at collarbone level.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Leaving a thick coat or puffer jacket on In a crash, bulky padding compresses instantly, leaving dangerous slack in the harness. Always strip off thick jackets before buckling them in.
- ❌ Switching to forward-facing too soon A baby's neck muscles just aren't strong enough to support their disproportionately heavy head in a frontal impact.
