😭 Taming the Evening Witching Hour Meltdown
Between 6 PM and 9 PM, many newborns hit a peak meltdown zone—the infamous witching hour. Most of the time, it's neither hunger nor pain, but their natural way of venting all the sensory overload built up during the day.
Gear to have ready
- 1 ergonomic baby wrap or carrier.
- A calm space (dimmed lights, minimal noise).
Action plan
1. 1. The diaper
Change it, even if it looks clean: just a tiny trace of pee can be enough to annoy them.
2. 2. Hunger check
Has it been less than 3 hours since the last feed? Offer again, even just a little top-up.
3. 3. The burp
Upright against your shoulder for a solid 5 minutes, patting their back. Patience is key, dad.
4. 4. Gas and colic
Lay them tummy-down across your forearm, and gently massage their belly clockwise.
5. 5. Skin-to-skin
Shirt off, baby against your chest, lights dimmed. Your heartbeat is their ultimate reset button.
6. 6. Wear and walk
Strap baby into the wrap and walk at a steady, rhythmic pace. Continuous white noise (rain, fan, vacuum) works wonders.
7. 7. Tag-team time
Ticked every single box and they're still wailing? Place them safely on their back in their crib and take 3 minutes to breathe in another room, or tap your partner in.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Shaking the baby NEVER shake a baby. It can cause irreversible brain damage (Shaken Baby Syndrome).
- ❌ Piling on stimulation Waving toys or introducing new sounds will only overwhelm their little nervous system even more.
- ❌ Ignoring warning signs Fever, high-pitched shrill crying, or refusing to feed: call your local emergency number. This site does not replace professional medical advice.
