😴 Safe Sleep for Baby (SIDS Prevention)
Setting up the sleep environment properly is the number one factor in preventing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The golden rules are simple, non-negotiable, and save lives.
Gear to get ready
- 1 cot or crib that meets safety standards.
- 1 firm mattress that fits the cot snugly with zero gaps.
- 1 baby sleeping bag (sleep sack) suited to baby's size and the season (check the TOG rating).
What to do
1. The sleep position
Always put baby down strictly on their back. Every single sleep, day or night.
2. Keep the cot bare
No duvets, no pillows, no loose blankets, no cot bumpers, and no chunky soft toys. Minimalist vibes only.
3. Room temperature
Keep the room temperature between 18°C and 19°C (64°F – 66°F). Cooler is better than overheating.
4. The environment
Zero smoking anywhere inside the house. No exceptions.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Putting baby to sleep on their front or side Massively increases the risk of suffocation and SIDS.
- ❌ Piling soft toys and blankets into the cot Major risk of baby's face getting covered and their breathing blocked.
