👃 Managing Smells and Baby's Super-Sensitive Nose
At birth, smell is your baby's sharpest superpower. Your natural dad scent reassures them, calms them down, and makes feeding way easier. On the flip side, overpowering artificial smells (colognes, essential oils, heavily scented detergents, tobacco) can overstimulate them, irritate their delicate airways, and completely mask the familiar scents they rely on.
What to do
- For the first few weeks, go totally fragrance-free. Your natural dad scent is more than enough to soothe your little one. And a crucial safe sleep reminder: never leave worn t-shirts, blankets, or cuddly toys in their cot to avoid any risk of suffocation.
Key moves
1. Hit pause on the cologne
Skip the aftershave, cologne, and heavily scented antiperspirant on your neck and chest before doing skin-to-skin or holding your baby.
2. Ditch the essential oils
Keep diffusers out of the nursery and main living spaces: many of those natural compounds are harsh irritants or even toxic to a baby's nervous system under age 3.
3. Switch to a neutral detergent
Wash baby's clothes (and your own shirts) with a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic detergent, and ditch the fabric softener altogether.
4. Cut out smoke exposure
Never smoke around your baby, and always swap your shirt and wash your hands if you smell of smoke before holding them.
