❓ What Happens After a Trip to Maternity Triage?

Rocking up to maternity triage doesn't mean a baby is popping out this very second. Once the checks are done, you're usually looking at one of 3 scenarios.

What the medical team checks

  • Foetal monitoring (baby's heart rate and contraction frequency).
  • Cervical exam (dilation and effacement).
  • Ultrasound or blood tests if needed.

The 3 possible scenarios

  1. 1. The false alarm (Heading back home)

Labour hasn't actually kicked off yet (cervix hasn't budged, waters intact). You head home to chill and wait for the real deal.

  2. 2. Admitted for observation

Too early to push, but something (a slip, a fever, waters leaking) means keeping mum and baby under observation for a few hours or days.

  3. 3. Headed to the delivery room

The cervix is making serious moves (active dilation) or induction is on the cards. This is it, dad: you walked in as two, you're walking out as three!

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Treating a false alarm like a defeat It happens all the time. A practice run to the hospital is way better than pacing the living room stressed out of your mind.
