🎁 The Baby Registry

The baby registry is your tactical defense system. Without it, you end up with 12 stuffed animals, 6 newborn onesies your baby will outgrow in 48 hours, and three musical mobiles playing the exact same lullaby. With it, you steer friends and family toward gear you actually need, tailored to your lifestyle and budget.

The 'Rule of Thirds' to balance it out

  • 1/3 budget-friendly items (under $30 / £25): baby bottles, teething rings, hooded towels, bibs, digital thermometer.
  • 1/3 mid-range essentials ($30 to $100 / £25 to £80): diaper bag, sleep sacks, play mat, bouncer, baby carrier.
  • 1/3 big-ticket gear (over $100 / £80): stroller, car seat, crib, high chair. Enable the 'group gifting' or cash contribution option for these.

Key moves

  1. 1. When to create and share it

Build it around month 5 or 6 (after the 20-week scan), once your gear choices are locked down. Share it around month 7 with family, friends, and colleagues so they have plenty of time to organize.

  2. 2. Where to host it

The most flexible route: a universal multi-store platform (like Babylist or similar) that lets you add items from any website, even second-hand finds. If you prefer getting hands-on advice in person, a dedicated baby store registry also does the trick.

  3. 3. The cash fund option

Most modern registry sites offer cash funds: link your bank details, guests chip in whatever they want, and the cash lands right in your account. A lot of dads swear by this—you buy items when you actually need them, hunt for sales, and pool money for the expensive stuff. Just give people a heads-up: older relatives often prefer gifting a physical, wrapped item.

  4. 4. Skip the newborn size

Babies wear newborn / 1-month clothing for two or three weeks—sometimes not at all. Ask for 3, 6, or 12-month sizes instead.

  5. 5. Try your luck

Slip that sports subscription or a coffee bean delivery onto the list. Worst case, nobody buys it. Very worst case, you buy it yourself using the registry's completion discount.

  6. 6. Dad hack

Only list gear you've researched or tested yourself: take that stroller for a test drive around the store before locking it in. And zero shame in adding a cash fund for second-hand gear or a massive newborn diaper stash: that's just pure tactical efficiency.
