🥕 Starting Solids: The Ultimate Beginner's Guide
Weaning is all about gradually introducing baby to foods other than milk. It should kick off between 4 completed months and 6 months, and always with the green light from your pediatrician or family doctor.
Gear to get ready
- 1 soft silicone spoon designed for tiny mouths.
- Smooth, single-ingredient vegetable purees (one veggie at a time: carrot, zucchini, green beans, squash).
How to do it
1. One food at a time
Offer a single vegetable for 2 to 3 days in a row to check how baby tolerates it and watch out for any allergic reactions.
2. Timing is everything
Offer the puree around lunchtime, right before or after a bottle or breastfeed.
3. Portion sizes
Start with just a few teaspoons, and never force it. Milk is still the main event until baby turns one.
4. Bringing in the fruit
About two weeks after introducing veggies, start offering cooked fruit purees (apple, pear, banana).
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Adding salt or sugar Baby's kidneys can't handle added salt yet, and sugar sets up bad habits early on. Keep it plain and simple.
- ❌ Starting before 4 completed months Their digestive and immune systems just aren't mature enough yet. Patience, dad.
