🧪 Semen Analysis & Sperm Quality: The Complete Lowdown

A semen analysis is the go-to test to check under the hood and see how your swimmers are doing. It mainly looks at three things: sperm count, motility (how well they swim), and morphology (their shape). Only your doctor or specialist can properly interpret the results within your couple's overall fertility journey.

What you need to prep & keep in mind

  • Your medical referral or lab order (from your GP, urologist, or fertility specialist).
  • Strict abstinence: Stick to the abstinence window recommended by the clinic (usually 2 to 5 days—neither too short nor too long, otherwise the numbers get skewed).
  • Photo ID and any relevant health insurance documents.

How does the test actually go down?

  1. 1. Arriving at the clinic

A thorough hand-wash and a quick clean with antiseptic wipes (to avoid introducing any rogue bacteria into your sample).

  2. 2. The collection

Done on-site via masturbation, in a private, locked room, straight into a sterile cup.

  3. 3. What the lab analyzes

Sperm count (overall concentration), motility (the percentage swimming properly), and morphology (the percentage with a standard, healthy shape).

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Dr. Googling the numbers yourself Lab benchmarks are tricky and reference ranges vary. Step away from search forums and wait for your doctor to walk you through the big picture.
  • ❌ Panicking over a less-than-stellar first result Sperm quality fluctuates naturally with stress, poor sleep, or even a recent fever. A repeat test a couple of months later is routine to see what's really going on.
  • ❌ Trying to do the collection at home Unless your clinic gives you a specific home-collection protocol with strict timing, transporting the sample risks cooling it down and ruining the results.
