🛑 Preventing Flat Head Syndrome (Plagiocephaly)

A newborn's skull is super soft and pliable. While sleeping on their back is non-negotiable for safety, it can cause a flat spot to develop if baby always turns their head to the exact same side.

Gear you'll need

  • A play mat.

What to do

  1. 1. Switch sides

Whenever you lay baby down to sleep, alternate which way their head turns (facing left one nap, facing right the next).

  2. 2. Tummy time (active supervision only!)

From the early weeks, place baby on their tummy 2 to 3 times a day for a few minutes while they're wide awake and you're right there watching.

  3. 3. Mix up the sights and sounds

Position toys, talking points, or light sources on the side baby is less naturally inclined to turn toward.

  4. 4. Go easy on bouncers and car seats

Don't leave baby parked in bouncers, swings, or car seats outside of actual car journeys.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Using head-shaping pillows or positioners in the cot Strongly advised against by health authorities due to suffocation and SIDS risks. Keep the cot completely clear.
  • ❌ Leaving baby on their tummy unattended Tummy time is exclusively for when your little one is fully awake and you've got your eyes glued right on them.
