🚑 Maternity ER: When and How to Get There?
Barring an extreme emergency, heading to the maternity ward isn't an Olympic sprint. In most cases, you've got about 2 hours to get your act together without losing your cool.
Gear & Prep
- Hospital bag (packed, zipped, and sitting by the front door).
- Pregnancy medical records (test results, ultrasound scans, health insurance info, ID).
- Transport sorted: Taxi or rideshare app ready to go (keep a number or app handy).
What to Do?
1. Assess the situation
If it's regular contractions building up or clear water breaking, no need to panic.
2. Take your time
Have her take a warm shower (it helps relax the cervix), double-check the bags, and head out calmly.
3. Call your local emergency number only if
There's heavy, continuous vaginal bleeding (like a faucet turned on), or a clear sign the baby is coming RIGHT NOW (an uncontrollable urge to push).
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Driving yourself As the dad-to-be, you need to be hands-on supporting your partner and managing logistics, not white-knuckling the steering wheel in traffic.
- ❌ Bolting at the very first belly rumble If contractions aren't regular and intense yet, it's probably false labor (Braxton Hicks).
This guide doesn't replace medical advice. When in doubt, call your doctor or your local emergency number.
