️ Encouraging Free Movement

Free movement is all about letting your baby develop their motor skills (rolling, crawling, sitting) on their own, without forcing them into positions they haven't mastered yet.

Gear to get ready

  • 1 firm play mat (like a dense foam mat or foam tiles).
  • A few easy-to-grab toys placed nearby.

What to do

  1. 1. On their back on the floor

Lay baby down on their back on the floor. It's the natural launchpad for them to discover their hands, turn their head, and eventually roll onto their tummy completely on their own.

  2. 2. A clear, safe space

Give them plenty of room to move around without the risk of bumping into sharp furniture.

  3. 3. Sit back and observe

Let them explore on their own without rushing in the second they grunt or put in a bit of effort.

Classic mistakes

  • ❌ Propping baby up before they can sit independently This puts unnecessary strain on their spine and muscles before they're actually ready to support themselves.
  • ❌ Using a baby walker Widely discouraged by pediatricians due to serious fall risks and the fact that they can actually hinder natural motor development.
