🤱 Dad and Breastfeeding: How to Be Useful Without Boobs
Breastfeeding is a team sport. She provides the milk, but you are the logistical, emotional, and protective backbone of the squad. A smooth breastfeeding journey relies heavily on the partner shielding mom's rest and sanity.
Your support kit
- A tall glass of water and a healthy snack every single time she nurses: breastfeeding triggers an intense, sudden thirst.
- The nursing pillow properly propped up and soft, dim lighting.
- Lanolin cream or soothing hydrogel pads on standby for cracked nipples or engorgement.
Key moves
1. Before the feed
Change the diaper to gently wake baby up, then hand them over to mom ready to latch.
2. After the feed
Take baby as soon as they're done. Burping, rocking, and settling them back to sleep with skin-to-skin on your chest: that's your department.
3. Be the shield
“Are you sure they're getting enough milk?”, “Feeding again already?”: shut down unhelpful commentary, especially from family.
4. Be her hype man
The early days can be physically brutal: pain, sheer exhaustion, self-doubt. Pay attention and remind her she’s doing an incredible job.
5. Build your own bond
Feeding isn't the only way to connect. Bath time, babywearing, gentle massages, skin-to-skin, and silly chats: that's your playground.
6. Dad hack
Every load of laundry, home-cooked meal, and dirty dish you take care of buys her an extra bit of sleep. By taking care of mom, you’re taking care of your baby too.
