👀 Boosting your newborn's visual development
At birth, baby's vision is pretty blurry. They mainly pick up high-contrast patterns at a distance of 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 inches)—which happens to be the exact distance between their face and yours during a feed. Nature thought of everything, mate.
What you'll need
- Black-and-white flashcards or board books (high-contrast patterns).
- A simple mobile with geometric shapes.
What to do
1. The sweet spot
Hold a black-and-white card about 25 cm (10 inches) from their eyes when baby is awake, alert, and chill.
2. Eye tracking
Move the card from left to right at a snail's pace to encourage baby to track the image with their eyes.
3. Facial gymnastics
Get right in front of them and gently exaggerate your facial expressions—wide smile, open mouth, raised eyebrows. You might look silly, but they'll be fascinated.
Classic mistakes
- ❌ Holding things too far away Beyond 30 cm (12 inches), shapes turn into a total blur and they'll instantly lose interest.
- ❌ Relying on screens Forget visual stimulation apps: screens are a strict no-go for little ones under 3.
